Upgrading of the Apennine crossing
between Sasso Marconi
and Barberino di Mugello
(Lots 6-7)

The project forms part of the upgrading of the A1 Milan-Naples motorway in the section across the Apennine mountains between Bologna and Florence.
The route, which varies with respect to the existing motorway section (Variante di Valico), lies within the Municipalities of S.Benedetto Val di Sambro and Castiglione de Pepoli connecting to the north with Lot 5B, comprising a first section of approximately 850m of the Val di Sambro tunnel, and to the south with Lot 9-11, comprising the so-called Base Tunnel.

The general characteristics of the design route are as follows:
carriageway with 2 lanes in each traffic direction, with a 3.75m wide emergency lane and 0.7m wide hard shoulder; the embankment/cuttings are generally divided by a traffic divider with a minimum width of 2.6m
two twin bore tunnels (Sparvo and Val di Sambro) for a total length of approximately 5.5 km per carriageway
two viaducts (Molino di Setta and Sparvo) with overall lengths of approximately 1.1 km per carriageway. Both the viaducts consist of a steel-concrete deck which forms a continuous beam structural design.

The project also includes the definition of:
carriageway construction layers
safety barriers
road signs (vertical and horizontal)
service roads
drainage of watercourses
motorway surface drainage
minor structures (walls, culverts, piling, etc...)
ventilation, lighting, signs, etc...
noise mitigation
programme of works.
