Doubling of the Turin - Savona Motorway

This project relates to the doubling of the Turin - Savona Motorway, which was constructed by Fiat in the 1960s with a single carriageway in both traffic directions.

Spea prepared the design and carried out the works supervision of the entire doubling of the motorway width, which covered, from the mid-1980s, approximately 80 km of motorway that crosses areas which are very different from a morphologically point of view, varying from the planes to Alpine and pre-Alpine areas. The project included sections designed alongside the existing carriageway and alternative routes.

The final design of 11 lots was prepared from 1994 onwards, and the relative Works Supervision was also completed. The total lengths of these lots is approximately 44.2 km and comprises the Rivere-Montecala alpine section, which is particularly complex due to the irregular morphology of the area (7 viaducts, 6 natural tunnels and a cut and cover tunnel with a total length of more than 4 km) and it contains some of the most significant road structures in Italy, such as the Stura di Demonte viaduct, which is 2,750 metres long with 80 m high piers.

The project also resolved the problem of the Millesimo ring road, with a parallel road network and ancillary works for modernisation of State Highway S.S. 28 bis.
